Learning English Online vs. Offline
Is There Much Difference?
The number of ESL or English as Second Language students is growing in Thailand each year. Thus, the number of online and offline language schools is also increasing. Online teaching means they wholly depend on a computer to attend classes; whereas, offline teaching is conducted in a classroom setting. Is one more advantageous than the other? Let’s find out.
Learning English Online
With the continuous development of technology, it is no wonder that more and more students are taking online English classes. Here are some of the benefits of studying English virtually.
Unlike offline studying, students can choose whatever schedule is convenient for them to study. They can choose how frequent they have their classes, and they can also choose different times that perfectly suit their schedules. This is especially good for students who go to school on a daily basis. Online language schools offer a lot of time slots for classes, so students will not worry about booking a class that they might be late to.
- Money and Time
Some Thai ESL students go abroad or attend an academy to study English. Going abroad, their expenses are not limited to the plane ticket and the tuition fee. They also need to consider their housing, food, and other necessities. Attending an academy, they have to spend some time traveling.
With online classes, they just need a stable Internet connection and a computer at home, and they are good to go. Therefore, they not only save money, but time as well.
The Internet is a very rich source of information. Thus, while students are having their classes, teachers can easily show images or video clips to reinforce learning. Since the culture of the teacher and the student are different, sharing is much easier.
Learning English Offline
A classroom setting in Thailand for studying English is another option for students to learn the language. Most academies offer one-on-one and group classes. In addition, students can choose to mix them. For instance, they can opt for 2 one-on-one classes and 1 group class. However, it all depends on the schedule that is available. Let’s see the benefits of offline English classes.
Interacting offline creates a sense of connection between the teacher and the student. Conversations that are done in real life expose nonverbal cues and important body language. These are some of the limitations in online learning. However, some Thai students prefer to interact with western teachers online as meeting them face to face can make the students quite nervous!
For students who study abroad, they are forced to use English since they are in a foreign country. They have no choice but to have a conversation using this language. As a result, their fluency improves.
- Memory and Concentration
Learning physically can make students remember lessons better because they can connect new words or phrases acquired with experience and contexts that are relevant. For instance, when they take down notes or answer a test, some students will absorb the information better.
Some learners are more comfortable outside of their home, making it easier for them to concentrate. Thus, there are less distractions. However, some students are the exact opposite and find it more comfortable to learn English from home.
- No Technical Difficulties
Online classes are only possible through a good Internet connection. Without it, there is no chance that a class can be conducted. For offline classes, this kind of difficulty is eliminated because teachers utilize books and boards for their classes.
It does not matter whether students study English online or offline. The most important thing is that they have the motivation and discipline to learn. Both have advantages that can suit the English needs of all students.
